After a period of dark, murky and stormy weather we were treated to the magical moment when the sun began to the breakthrough the clouds. It transformed the figures going about their daily lives into silhouettes with long shadows reaching down Edinburgh’s Elm Row. The light also transforms the buildings of Greenside place and the St James Quarter, turning them into the skyline of a golden futuristic city. We’re only reminded this is Edinburgh by the presence of the London Road clock. The recently restored Victorian clock sits quietly reminding passers by of the passage of time as it’s done since it was moved to its location in 1955.

Light in this work is not merely an element of composition—it is a dynamic force that reshapes and reinterprets the familiar streetscape of Edinburgh. The transformative nature of light is evident in how it shifts the mood, atmosphere, and even the perceived reality of the scene. As the sun breaks through after days of gloom, it acts almost as a painter, casting elongated shadows and turning ordinary passers-by into mysterious silhouettes. The architecture, too, is rendered anew: buildings bathed in golden hues take on an otherworldly quality, their forms sharpened or softened depending on the angle of illumination.
This interplay of light and shadow suggests a world in flux, where each moment is fleeting and unique. The light not only reveals details but also obscures them, inviting viewers to reconsider what is seen and unseen. It brings a sense of drama and magic to everyday life, reminding us of the city's capacity for continual reinvention. The London Road clock stands as a steady witness amidst this shifting brilliance, anchoring the scene in time even as the light transforms its surroundings. Ultimately, the luminous moment captured in the image speaks to the potential for change and renewal, underscoring how light can alter perception, evoke emotion, and breathe life into the mundane.
