A photograph of a sculpture of a pigeon that sits apart from the rest of the flock. The sculpture is located on Edinburgh’s Elm Row, in the up and coming Leith area. Is the pigeon lost, or has it decided to simply go it alone? Who can tell?

Created by sculptor Lorna Kinloch in 1996, the bronze pigeons have long been a part of the furniture throughout Leith’s transformation. Its recent placement makes me believe the planners really thought about the spirit of Leith. It’s one of those places that always has gone its own way. It was originally independent from Edinburgh and even when it was incorporated, it still maintained its independent streak. Simply setting one of the pigeons apart from the flock is a call out to that spirit.
It’s one of the gifts that good public art gives, it inspires imaginations allowing us to create our own stories about the work we interact with.
