Taken the winter before the Covid 19 Pandemic in 2020, Edinburgh’s Princes Street sparkled with lights and buzzed with the hustle and bustle of Christmas revellers. That year the roof of the Waverly Market Shopping centre had been transformed into a massive beer garden.

However, at this time of night there’s a strange mixture of people, along with those who have travelled to be there. There was a contingent of those who hadn't. The commuters heading to the train station and the people passing through on their way home. For them the cold wet night and crowded pavement where an obstacle to overcome, on their way home. Once home they would feel safe, warm and cosy.
It’s interesting that the emotional experience of this place can be so different depending on the reasons a person happens to find themselves there. Bearing that in mind the next time we happen to be in places like this can help us be more understanding commuters and more gracious visitors and guests.
