Even on a rain soaked night in Stockholm, there’s a reminder that the LGBTQ+ community exists outside the bounds of cultural, gender or religious identity. The street depicted in the work is alive with colour from the restaurants, bars and shops in this metropolitan city.

A viewer could be forgiven for missing that the scene depicts many colours of the more recent pride flags, but why shouldn’t it? The pride flag is a rainbow that aims to represent the sections of the population that don’t prescribe to heteronormative and perceived gender ‘norms’, and there’s a lot of different people that fall into that category.
The great thing about this community is they know that inclusion and visibility matters as individually each ‘letter’ has had its own battles, from misrepresentation and stifling of rights to physical and emotional abuse from people known and unknown to them. The different parts of the community band together with a common goal, the simple right to exist without having to justify why their rights are just as relevant as anyone else’s they just are because they’re human beings too.
Members of our community have always existed. The only thing that’s new is that there’s an evolution in what we use to signal our existence. By banding together we’ve realised we’re not alone and we don’t need to hide our true selves anymore. We’re also more aware of the contribution our community has made to our respective cultures and can celebrate it. We know that there’s more to do but with the help of our allies there’s a chance to make things better for all of us.
