Exit

Victorian engineering frames Edinburgh’s evening sky beckoning travellers to explore the city

Waverley Station’s Victorian glass-paned roof has long been a feature of the station that connects Edinburgh to the rest of the country. However, decades of coal and diesel engines stained the glass obscuring the sky. It was refurbished in 2012 and this allowed light to flood into the station once more.

Exit captures the interplay of the evening light and the human made landscape, the shadows below echoing the structure above like a massive forest canopy. It’s the exit to the station but also the entrance to the city of Edinburgh and all it contains.
Like all things, the human experience of this place will be different for each person passing through. For some it’s about arriving home or going to work, for others, is it the gateway to something new? The new vista provided by the refurbished roof is a reminder that sometimes you have to wipe off the grime of the past to experience the future.
This work is professionally framed and mounted to a finished size of 15.5 by 19 inches, ready for hanging. Use the contact me button below if you’ve questions about this.
