Taking the air on a wintry day

A photographic study of the Fife countryside that reminds us of the freedom and lift of taking the air on a blustery day. It’s interesting when people talk about the benefits of ‘blowing out the cobwebs’ when they decide to go for a walk, but it’s not a new thing.

In these modern times people challenge themselves to get the steps in or burn off a period of indulgence. This is seen as a new phenomenon. The benefits of regularly taking light to moderate exercise have long been a way of improving our health and wellbeing, ever since people started practicing medicine. The science may have changed, and we better understand why it can be good for you, but the ideas are still the same. In Recency England the idea that taking a walk, increasing the amount of oxygenated blood to the brain stimulates the production of serotonin making you feel better would have been completely unheard of. They just knew it helped.
When walking in nature you can feel a sense of being connected to something bigger, if you’re mulling over a thorny problem or working through a complicated set of emotions it seems to help with perspective. I still think back to times in my life when just heading out for a walk brought a renewed vigour and focus to what I was working through.
With this shot, the grainy lithographic feel is intentional as we think back on those walks in the past. Our memories of walking on blustery days and our thoughts we had at the time stay with us.
