In most western societies where there is a free market economy, choosing where to spend your money and what you spend your money on is one of the powers the regular person has. It might seem like a small thing but collectively, we can make a difference.
Imagine one person clapping in an auditorium full of people might not make too much of an impact on the people on stage. However, if all of the people in the audience started clapping the noise would be thunderous and the people on stage would have to acknowledge it. Our choices, if enough of us do the same, can have an impact.
