The top of Leith Walk has long been at the centre of Edinburgh’s LGBTQ+ community with it’s collection of venues, businesses and services. Many of us will have memories of this place through the years.

It may change how it looks; the timeless Art Deco façade of the playhouse theatre sits next to the glass and steel of the Omni Centre and Glasshouse hotel, but the core message of diversity and hospitality is always there. The diversity of uses in the buildings in a relatively small area is staggering. St Mary’s Cathedral sits between a massive department store and a pub celebrating one of Edinburgh’s famous authors, Sir Conan Doyle. This diversity is probably why Edinburgh’s LGBTQ+ community centres itself here.
It’s because the accessibility of these places, the fact that everyone is welcome no matter how you identify, means that so many people will have memories of this place. If many different people can co-exist in such a small area, could it mean that by taking time to understand what diversity and inclusion means it can enrich our world?
The big sky in this image is a reminder that there’s a wider world out there, and there’s bigger problems we all face. Maybe by accepting what makes us all different will allow us to tackle these together?
