Tay Rail Bridge Revisited

The human spirit endures even when disaster strikes

The artwork Tay Rail Bridge Revisited is a poignant and evocative piece created as a companion to the earlier Forth Rail Bridge work. This work captures the essence of the Tay Rail Bridge from the “Dundee side” with a distinct abstraction and limited colour palette. It mirrors the style of the Forth Rail Bridge, emphasising the imaginative and sombre aspects of human ingenuity and endurance.

The piece also serves as a historical reminder, capturing not only the current bridge but the remains of its predecessor, which tragically collapsed in 1879, resulting in the loss of 59 lives. The original footings of the bridge are still visible, standing as a testament to the disaster and the resilience of the human spirit to rebuild and endure.
The abstraction again seeks to explore the boundaries of visual recognition while retaining the viewer’s ability to understand the subject. However, this time the colour palette is muted and sombre as if to reflect the bridges history.
As with the Forth Rail Bridge work, the work stands as a testament to human resilience in a world where it needed more than ever.
