Number 44

Winter vibrancy in amongst the chaos of construction on Leith Street

The winter afternoons light reflects off the buildings of Edinburgh's Leith Street casting the traffic and the roadworks into shadow. The area has seen a lot of change over the years and this image captures some of these in the middle of construction.

The old buildings of Leith Street gave way to brutalist offices and hotels and then the sweeping metal and glass of the Omni Centre. The cranes towering above the buildings where a sign of more to come with the creation of the St James Quarter. The road works in the foreground signalled more change in the form of the re-introduction of the tram system.
One part of this in the image that has been a constant, was the appearance of the number 44 bus. For many it’s the main connection to the city centre from the east side of the city. For me it was an escape route from the quietness of suburbia, as beautiful and leafy as it was, it was the noise and busyness of the city centre that inspired me. Later in life I found that you need to experience both peace and loudness in your life as you can’t appreciate one without the other.
Accepting that we need to experience many things to appreciate the value of one gives us balance, for example to appreciate consistency we need to experience change.
